Learn Guitar DVD - The Best Way To Learn Guitar?

18th September 2008

The greatest guitar players in the world are one point beginners like everyone else. They don’t just pick up the guitar for the first time and immediately become one of the greatest. In fact when Eric Clapton got his first guitar, he was frustrated and almost gave up playing because he wasn’t very good at it.

Great guitar players in one way or another learn their stuff someone else. Though some of them are largely self-taught they still had to learn from someone else.

There are many ways to learn how to play guitar and depending on your speed of learning, desire, persistence, time and budget or other situations, the best choice for you could be different from others.

Five ways to learn how to play guitar:

  1. Having a guitar tutor teach you in a class or one-on-one – This way you will have someone teach you in person so your mistakes can be easily spotted and corrected immediately. It has a lot of benefits but also many drawbacks. One major drawback is the cost. Guitar teachers (coaches, tutors, trainers, whatever you want to call it) often charge on a per hour basis so if you’re a slow learner and have a tight budget, this may not be the best option for you
  2. Learn guitar books – Books are great because it is the cheapest option and you can learn quite a lot but you are limited to pictures and words. It might require a little bit of imagination to get the most out of it. This may not be good for some people especially those not in the favor of reading. This is best for people who want to learn guitar but are on a really tight budget.
  3. Guitar magazines – Guitar magazines used to be just tabs and CDs with some backing tracks, pictures and words. Nowadays top magazines also include a learn guitar DVD that show you a particular skill or teach you a couple of songs. The learn guitar DVDs are not as good as dedicated ones and you tend to have the need to buy quite a few of them and cumulatively they end up costing more than even the dedicated learn guitar DVDs.
  4. Online guitar lessons – This is also a good way to learn how to play guitar, it could even be as good as having a learn guitar DVD. Not everyone can get the full benefits from it though especially if their internet connection speed is slow. The mode of learning is usually videos and you might have to sacrifice video quality to get learning fast. Some online guitar lessons charge you a monthly subscription fee but you get thousands of lessons from different experts. The biggest advantage over learn guitar DVDs though is that you don’t have to wait for shipping.
  5. Learn guitar DVD – This is my preferred method to learning guitar. It could get expensive but some of the cheap ones are also good. Learn guitar DVDs could cost you in the range $10 - $250 but the costs are about the same if you consider per DVD cost. A good learn guitar DVD usually comes with accompanying book and audio backing tracks. Learn guitar DVDs could take some time to ship especially if you live far away from the origin.

The question remains, are learn guitar DVDs the best way to learn how to play guitar?

In some cases learn guitar DVDs are the best way to learn guitar but if money is no object then having a guitar teacher personally teach you how to play guitar is the best way to learn because you have someone who can tailor his teachings to your needs and speed of learning and could also be a good coach who can push you to improve and get results much faster.

The best thing using a learn guitar DVD is that you can learn in your own time whether it’s the middle of the night or early morning, you set it yourself. There’s also no need to commute to lessons and the cost is relatively cheap.

    • Feats Won’t Fail You Now: Paul Barrere of Little Feat - GuitarLife - The band’s slinky, sinuous songs drip with style like Cajun hot sauce bubbling from a freshly boiled crawfish. From the opening strains of their sensational slide-laden jams to the final passages of their deeply rhythmic sonic explorations, Little Feat carries forward many of the best musical traditions of our collective cultures both America’s and the World’s. With three decades of great recorded work behind them, the Feat are still pouring their hearts into regular releases (10 in the past three years, including greatest hits packages!) that are as solid as their legendary early work.
    • Allman Brother Warren Haynes: The Bus Stops Here - GuitarLife - Wherever it is they park rock ‘n’ roll tour busses between road trips, that must be where Warren Haynes sleeps, one eye open, ready to hop the next velvet-lined Prevost that dares crank its overworked diesel and fire its yellowed running lights. Haynes is a road-warrior of the highest order, touring with as many as three headlining acts during any given year; sitting in on countless album dates for unnamed others. Keep in mind that Haynes sorta considers both Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers his full time gigs.
